Chamser Kangri Expedition (6622m)

The story

The High Plateau Ascent Above Tso Moriri

Chamser Kangri rises dramatically above the eastern shore of Tso Moriri Lake in Ladakh's remote Rupshu region.

Expedition story

A mountain journey shaped by terrain, weather, and summit-day decisions.

Ascent notes

What the climb feels like on the mountain.

01

The mountain shares the same massif with Lungser Kangri (6666m), the highest peak of the region.

02

The expedition travels across the Changthang Plateau, home to nomadic Changpa shepherds, wild kiang, blue sheep, and some of the most spectacular high-altitude landscapes in the Indian Himalayas.

03

Although technically moderate compared with many Himalayan climbs, Chamser Kangri is a serious high-altitude expedition because of its glacier sections, long summit day, and camps above 6000m.

04

Climbers establish Base Camp near the grassy meadows of Kurchya, then move through Camp 1 and Camp 2 before the summit push along the long summit ridge.

05

From the summit, the views open toward Lungser Kangri, Tso Moriri Lake, the Changthang Plateau, Tibetan Plateau, and endless ranges of the Eastern Himalayas.

Why this climb works

Why Chamser Kangri Is a High-Altitude Challenge

The climb asks for steady pacing, acclimatization, mountain movement, and summit-day focus.

Field note

Guided does not mean effortless.

The expedition is manageable because the progression is measured, not because the mountain is casual.

01

Altitude Above 6600m

The summit reaches 6622m, where thin air, cold, and recovery become the dominant challenges.

02

High Camps Above 6000m

Camp 2 is generally established around 6100m before the summit attempt, requiring strong acclimatization.

03

Glacier and Scree Sections

The approach to Camp 1 and Camp 2 includes scree slopes, glacier sections, snow, and mixed high-altitude terrain.

04

Long Summit Ridge

Summit day involves a long ridge climb with a 10 km round trip that usually takes 12-14 hours.

05

Remote Changthang Logistics

The mountain sits in a remote region where network is limited to Leh and partial service in Korzok.
