Winter Zes Ri Expedition (6040m)

The story

A first 6000m objective in winter Ladakh

Near the remote village of Korzok on the shores of Tso Moriri, Zes Ri overlooks the open valleys and dramatic mountain scenery of Changthang. Winter brings frozen terrain and a quieter, more isolated Himalayan landscape.

Expedition story

A mountain journey shaped by terrain, weather, and summit-day decisions.

Ascent notes

What the climb feels like on the mountain.

01

Under suitable conditions, Zes Ri is a non-technical objective that can appeal to fit beginners aiming for their first 6,000m summit. Non-technical does not mean easy: altitude, snow conditions and sustained effort remain demanding.

02

Temperatures on the mountain may reach approximately -20°C to -30°C or lower, with strong winds increasing exposure. These are indicative conditions rather than a forecast.

03

The programme combines rest and acclimatisation in Leh, a further acclimatisation hike from Korzok and a summit attempt with individual guide support, medical support and emergency oxygen backup.

04

Weather, snow stability, road access and each participant's condition determine the final plan. The expedition leader may modify the itinerary or cancel the summit attempt when conditions are unsafe.

Why this climb works

Why winter Zes Ri demands preparation

Even a non-technical ascent can become demanding in extreme cold, strong winds and thin air. Actual conditions and team readiness determine whether an attempt proceeds.

Field note

Guided does not mean effortless.

The expedition is manageable because the progression is measured, not because the mountain is casual.

01

Altitude above 6000m

Thin air and altitude-related illness can affect participants regardless of fitness. Acclimatisation and guide assessment govern progression.

02

Extreme cold and wind

Mountain temperatures may fall to -20°C to -30°C or lower. Wind chill adds to the demands on clothing, hydration and resilience.

03

Changing snow conditions

The non-technical classification applies only under suitable conditions. Snow stability, visibility and route safety can prevent an ascent.

04

Sustained summit effort

The indicative four-hour ascent and two-hour descent can vary considerably in winter; pacing and turnaround decisions remain essential.

05

Remote winter travel

Snow, ice, road closures and flight disruptions can change the schedule. Plan flexible onward travel and allow additional time.
