Everything You Need to Know About Yunam Peak Expedition (6111m)

The Himalaya offers countless mountains for climbers, but only a few peaks are perfect for those who want to experience their first 6000-meter Himalayan summit. One of the best among them is Yunam Peak.

Standing at 6,111 meters, Yunam Peak is a stunning high-altitude mountain located in the remote landscapes of Lahaul Valley. The peak is easily accessible from Manali and lies near the famous Baralacha La Pass.

Because of its relatively straightforward route and shorter expedition duration, Yunam Peak has become one of the most popular 6000m beginner mountaineering expeditions in India.

In this guide, we will cover everything you need to know before climbing Yunam Peak, including itinerary, difficulty level, best time to climb, preparation, equipment, and more.

Where is Yunam Peak Located?

Yunam Peak is located in the high-altitude region of Lahaul Valley in Himachal Pradesh. The mountain stands close to the Manali-Leh highway, which makes it one of the most accessible 6000m peaks in the Indian Himalaya.

The expedition starts from Manali, a well-known adventure hub in North India. From Manali, climbers travel through spectacular mountain scenery toward Jispa, which is used for acclimatization.

The expedition then continues toward Bharatpur, where the base camp for Yunam Peak is established.

Because the base camp can be reached by road, the expedition becomes much shorter compared to many Himalayan climbs that require long trekking approaches.

Height and Difficulty of Yunam Peak

Yunam Peak stands at an altitude of 6,111 meters (20,049 feet).

Although the peak crosses the significant 6000 meter mark, it is generally considered a non-technical or semi-technical climb.

This means climbers do not need advanced mountaineering techniques like steep ice climbing or complex rope work.

However, the expedition still requires:

• Good physical fitness
• Proper acclimatization
• Mental strength
• Ability to hike long hours at high altitude

The summit push can be challenging because of the altitude, but with proper preparation, Yunam Peak is achievable for strong trekkers and beginner mountaineers.
